Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez (born November 2, 1983 in Guantánamo ) is a Cuban wrestler . In 2018 he became world champion in free style in the weight class up to 61 kg body weight

Career

At the 2018 World Cup in Budapest, the almost 35-year-old Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez from Cuba surprised the wrestling world with his title win in the weight class up to 61 kg in free style. On the way to this success, he defeated Ivan Guidea, Romania, Bagher Yakcheschi, Iran, Joe Colon from the United States and Gadschimurad Raschidow from Russia. He was one of the oldest wrestlers to win a world title for the first time.

Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez started wrestling back in 1993. He is a student and has been coached by Julio Mendieta Cuellar since 2009. His international career began in 2002 when he became the Pan-American Junior Champion (Juniors) in Bogota in both styles (Greco-Roman and free style) in the weight class up to 60 kg. In 2003 he also started at the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Istanbul, but finished in the weight class up to 60 kg after a defeat against Makhach Murtasalijew from Russia only 15th.

In 2005 he was the first Pan-American champion in Guatemala City among seniors in the weight class up to 60 kg body weight.

After that there was a long pause, during which he no longer appeared on the international wrestling mat. The reason was that he was no longer able to place himself in the front of the field in the important national competitions in Cuba. In addition, Cuba rarely attended international tournaments for reasons of cost. Only in 2011 was Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez able to qualify again for participation in an international championship, the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara. There he took 3rd place in the weight class up to 60 kg.

In 2012 he became the Pan-American champion in the weight class up to 60 kg in Colorado Springs and was able to qualify a little later in Kissimmee Orlando (USA) in the same weight class for participation in the Olympic Games in London. At the Olympic wrestling tournament he was eliminated after his first fight with a defeat against Kenichi Yumoto from Japan and ended up in 14th place.

In 2014, Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez won the world championship in Tashkent in the weight category up to 61 kg with victories over Jean Diatta, Senegal, Rahul Manu, India and Alexander Bogomojew , Russia, a defeat against Haji Aliyev from Azerbaijan and a victory over Andrei Perpelita from Moldova for the first time a medal at a world championship, a bronze one.

In 2015 he won the Pan American Games in Toronto in the weight class up to 57 kg in front of Angel Escobedo from the United States. At the World Cup this year in Las Vegas he came in the same weight class to a victory over Samit Nadirbek Uulu from Kyrgyzstan, but retired after a loss in the round of 16 against Viktor Lebedev from Russia and only came in 16th place.

At the Pan-American Championship in Frisco (USA) in February 2016, he won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 65 kg. A month later he qualified at the same place in the weight class up to 57 kg by winning the qualifying tournament for participation in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In Rio he defeated Abbos Rachmonow, Uzbekistan and Adama Diatta from Senegal, then lost to Rei Higuchi from Japan, then defeated Yang Kyong-il from North Korea in his first consolation match, but then lost the fight for an Olympic bronze medal against Hassan Rahimi from the Iran.

At the 2017 World Championships in Paris, Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez started again in the weight class up to 61 kg. There he defeated Liu Minghu, China, Behnam Ehsanpour, Iran and Daulet Nijaskebow from Kazakhstan, lost in the semifinals to Hajji Aliyev, but won the battle for a bronze medal against Rinya Nakamura from Japan. That was his second medal win at a world championship.

In 2018 he won a world title for the first time, as described above.

In April 2019 he started in the same weight class and in the same style at the Pan-American Championship in Buenos Aires. He came there in the final, in which he lost to the American Joseph Daniel Colon. At this year's World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) he met the Azerbaijan Akhmednabi Gwarsatilow in the 2nd round , against whom he lost on points. Since Gwarsatilow did not reach the final, Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez dropped out early and only finished 23rd.
