Ken'ichi Yumoto ( Japanese 湯 元 健 一 , Yumoto Ken'ichi ; born December 4, 1984 in Wakayama , Wakayama Prefecture ) is a Japanese wrestler . He won a bronze free style featherweight medal at the 2008 Olympics .

Career

Ken'ichi Yumoto began wrestling with his twin brother Shin'ichi Yumoto at the Wakayama Kogyo Sports Club , with both focusing on free style. The coach there was Takumi Adachi. Due to his success in the national youth field, Ken'ichi Yumoto joined the Japanese national team of freestyle wrestlers at the age of 20. His trainers were or are there Masakazu Hijikata, Yu Sugiyama u. Takahira Wada. At the same time he also started studying at Nippon Sport Science University and has been working for its sports club ever since. In the meantime he is also a trainer at this university.

His international wrestling career began in 2001. He started at the Asian Junior Championship (Juniors) in Tehran and came 4th in the bantamweight division.

In 2002, Ken'ichi Yumoto took 1st place in the national school featherweight championship. In 2004 he won his first medal with a 3rd place at the Japanese championship for seniors. In the semifinals he had to admit defeat to Takafumi Kojima. In 2004 he started again at the Asian Junior Championship (Juniors) and won the bronze medal in featherweight behind Mohammed Reza Ashouri from Iran and Talgat Saischenow from Kazakhstan .

After Kenji Inoue , the medalist of the 2004 Featherweight Olympics, had resigned at the beginning of 2005 , Ken'ichi Yumoto got the chance to determine the starter for the 2005 World Cup in an elimination match in Tokyo against Noriyuki Takatsuka . He won this fight and therefore started at the Featherweight World Championship in Budapest . Of course, he still had to learn the hard way, because with a defeat against Yandro Quintana from Cuba , a victory over Tevfik Odabasi from Turkey and a defeat against Ojuunbilegiin Pürewbaatar from Mongolia , he only came in 13th place.

In December 2005 he succeeded with a victory over Noriyuki Takatsuka for the first time to become Japanese champion in the senior featherweight division. In June 2006 he lost to Takatsuka when it came to who should represent Japan at the 2006 World Cup and in January 2007 Ken'ichi Yumoto won the Japanese championship of 2006 (!) Over Kenji Inoue , who had made a comeback , on points and became Japanese champion for the second time. At the 2007 World Cup in Baku , he lost his first fight against Samat Shapukow from Kazakhstan , with which he was eliminated and only finished 22nd.

In December 2007, Ken'ichi Yumoto lost in the final of the Japanese featherweight championship against his rival Noriyuki Takatsuka, which his chances of participating in the Olympics in Beijing were not the best. However, Takatsuka only finished 13th in the featherweight division at the first Olympic qualifying tournament in Martigny / Switzerland . Ken'ichi Yumoto was therefore sent to the start at the second Olympic qualification tournament in Warsaw in 2008 . At this tournament the big international breakthrough came for him, because he won there over Gandsorigiin Mandachnaran from Mongolia , George Bucur from Romania , Andrei Perpeliță from Moldova , Jo Tong Hyok from North Korea and others. Kim Jong-dae from South Korea took 1st place and won the right to start for Japan at the Beijing Games. Before he could start there, however, he had to compete against Noriyuki Takatsuka in the official Japanese Olympic elimination in Tokyo on June 25, 2008 . He won this fight and with it the Japanese starting place in Beijing.

Ken'ichi Yumoto was able to convince in Beijing. He won there over Vitali Korjakin from Tajikistan a . Yogeshwar Dutt from India , but lost in the semifinals to Vasyl Fedoryschyn from Ukraine . But he won an Olympic bronze medal with a victory over Basar Basargurujew from Kyrgyzstan .

His first start after the 2008 Olympic Games was in August 2009 at the National Sports Festival in Niigata . He won there featherweight with a victory in the final over Keiji Matsumoto from Nagasaki . In December 2009 he reached the Japanese featherweight championships behind Hiroyuki Oda and Noriyuki Takatsuka only 3rd place. For this reason, he was not used at the 2009 international championships. In December 2010 he was again Japanese champion before Niriyuki Takatsuka and Oda Hiroyuki. He was then also used at the World Cup this year in Istanbul , where he fought with victories over Vladimir Dubow, Bulgaria and Wassyl Fedoryschyn , Ukraine, a defeat against Bessik Kuduchow , Russia and victories over Wilfredo Henriquez Hernandez, Venezuela and Didier Païs , France , a world championship bronze medal .

In April 2012, he defeated the Japanese champion from 2011 Shogo Maeda in the Japanese Olympic elimination and thus secured the starting place at the Olympic Games in London . In London he won over Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez, Cuba , then lost to Toğrul Əsgərov from Azerbaijan and, since he was Olympic champion , was able to continue in the consolation round. In this he first defeated Tim Schleicher from Germany , but lost the fight for an Olympic bronze medal against Scott Coleman from the United States and came in 5th place.
