The twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple is a ceiling fresco by Januarius Zick from 1784 in the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Verena in Rot an der Rot in Upper Swabia .

Depicted incident

The depicted incident of the twelve year old Jesus in the temple is described in the Gospel according to Luke ( Lk 2,41–52  EU ). As every year, Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem with their son for the Passover . On their return, they lost their son, who was left in the temple without their knowledge . After three days they found him sitting among the scribes , listening to them and asking questions.

The fresco spans three bays of the church. Zick leads the viewer of the picture with the help of two children from the lower edge of the picture. In the center of the fresco below is the Ark of the Covenant , a cult object of the Israelite people. Above you can see the stone tablets of Moses with the Ten Commandments , which were normally in the ark of the covenant during the wanderings of the people of Israel. The viewer recognizes that the scene takes place in a Jewish temple.

Zick chose the exact moment in the story when the child was found again. Mary , the only one dressed in a red robe like the young Jesus , points to her son, while Joseph looks at her somewhat incredulously. Minutes later, Mary will ask Jesus: "Why did he do this to her and Joseph?" However, Jesus will ask her: "Why are you looking for him at all?"

Jesus is in the middle of the picture. He is shown as a child with his right hand raised. His outstretched index finger points to the tablets of the law above him. The scribes sit around him, discussing excitedly. The above boundary of the fresco forms a classicist cassette dome. From this a lantern grows, in which a small open window can be seen. On this open window sits a small black bird against a blue sky. The little black bird could be a swallow .
