description

Five-fold flowers

The two-flowered sandwort grows as a grassy, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of about 10 to 30 cm. The creeping stems are branched and have short hairs.

The opposite leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The short petiole is ciliate. With a length of 2 to 5 millimeters, the bald leaf blade is once or twice as long as it is wide, broadly ovoid to rounded and blunt at the front.

The flowering period extends from July to September. The flowers are usually singly or in pairs on lateral, up to 20 millimeters long shoots. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical and five-fold. The five pointed sepals are one to three-veined and have narrow skin margins. The five white, bare petals are 4 to 4.5 millimeters long and barely longer than the sepals.

The capsule fruit typical of the genus Arenaria pops up with six short teeth. The seeds have no appendages.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes the eastern Pyrenees, Carpathians, Apennines, Balkans and the silicate areas of the Alps.

Moist, lime-poor soils, snow valleys, open lawns, scree and rubble are preferred as locations. The two-flowered sand herb thrives at altitudes of 1700 to 3200 meters. In terms of plant sociology, it is a species of the Salicetea herbaceae class.
