Dario dario is a very small fish that doesn't even reach a length of 2 cm. The largest male captured in the wild was 14.8 mm in length and the largest female was 13 mm long. In the aquarium, the fish grew up to a length of 17.2 mm. Your body is moderately elongated and flattened on the sides. The head is rounded, the muzzle short, the mouth large and slightly upwards. In the upper jaw there are three to four rows of teeth in front and one on each side, in the lower jaw there are four rows in front and two each on the sides. The palatine bone is edentulous. There is a short spike on the gill cover, usually hidden under a scale. Males are reddish in color with seven blue, vertical stripes on the sides of the body and blue-red fins. Females are gray with more or less clearly visible, darker side stripes and transparent fins. The number of vertebrae is from 24 to 25.

Way of life

Dario dario lives in small, densely overgrown with Limnophila , Hygrophila , Vallisneria , Ottelia and Rotala rivers and ponds with sandy bottom or fine gravel bottom. It feeds on very small invertebrates.
