Ottelia (German Ottelie ) is a genus of aquatic plants in the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae)consisting of around 20 species.

description

Ottelia species are perennial, herbaceous freshwater plants. The stem axis is usually thickened like a corm . The leaves are basal, petiolate, and usually divorced at the base. The leaf blade is submerged or sometimes floats on the surface of the water. It is linear to broadly ovate and 3 to 11 veined. The spathe is elliptical to ovate and usually 2 to 6-winged. Its tip is divided into two or three parts.

The plants have one to many flowers . The flowers are bisexual or unisexual, in the latter case the plants are diocesan . Male flowers usually have a longer flower stalk . Hermaphrodite and feminine flowers are short-stalked and / or have no stem. The sepals are greenish and linear, oblong or ovate. The 3 petals are colored, round to wide, obovate and much longer and wider than the sepals. There are 3 to 15 stamens present. The stamens are linear and flattened. Staminodes are often three present in female flowers, more rarely 2, 1 or they are absent. The ovary consists of 3, 6, 9 or rarely more carpels . The ovules are numerous. Two linear scars are planned for each stylus. The fruits are cylindrical, spindle-shaped or conical. The numerous seeds are small and often hairy. The developing fruit ("water berry") ends up under water after pollination.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Ottelia , named after a Malabar folk name, was established in 1805 by Christian Hendrik Persoon . Synonyms for Ottelia Persoon are Damasonium Schreb. nom. illeg., Beneditaea Toledo , Boottia Wall. , Hymenotheca Salisb. , Oligolobos Gagnep. , Xystrolobos Gagnep.

The genus occurs from tropical to subtropical to temperate areas in Asia, Africa, Australia and South America.

The genus Ottelia includes about 20 species:
