The dwarf armored catfish ( Corydoras pygmaeus ) is a peaceful freshwater ornamental fish of the genus Corydoras . The schooling fish has a simple, gray drawing. A dark line runs from the end of the tail to the tip of the snout. Females can reach a maximum size of three centimeters. Males, on the other hand, remain somewhat smaller at 25 millimeters. Miniature armored catfish live up to eight years.

The tropical rivers of South America are his home, including the Rio Madeira Basin. In contrast to other armored catfish , the dwarf armored catfish does not stay on the bottom of the water, but often also crosses the open water. The miniature armored catfish is an intestinal breather , which is why it needs free access to the surface of the water to breathe.

Aquaristics

As one of the smallest Corydoras species, Corydoras pygmaeus can be kept in tanks with an edge length of 60 cm or more. The substrate should be fine sand in which the fish can dig and on which they do not injure their barbels. The planting should be dense, but offer enough swimming space for the catfish. The fish are to be kept in groups of at least 10 animals.

The feeding of the miniature armored catfish should be varied and predominantly carnivorous . Very fine frozen food such as Cyclops or fine live food are well suited.
