Zwi Katz ; Hebrew צבי כץ; (Born July 10, 1927 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian Holocaust survivor and author who emigrated to Israel .

Life

Zwi Katz was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1927 and grew up in a middle-class Jewish family. After the Wehrmacht invaded Lithuania, he was imprisoned in the Kaunas ghetto in the summer of 1941 . After its dissolution in 1944, Katz was deported to the Kaufering concentration camp, a satellite camp of the Dachau concentration camp . At the end of April 1945 he and the other prisoners were driven by the SS towards the Alps on the so-called death march from Dachau and liberated by the US Army in Waakirchen in Upper Bavaria . After his liberation, he embarked on a multi-year odyssey through Europe and the Mediterranean and reached Israel in 1948, where he started a family and worked in the Ministry of Agriculture.

In the eighties, Zwi Katz began to deal intensively with his past. He speaks as a contemporary witness at schools in Germany and Israel, is a regular participant in commemorative events and for many years was deputy chairman of the Association of Survivors of the Dachau Landsberg / Kaufering satellite camps. In 2002 Zwi Katz published his autobiographical book "From the banks of the Memel into the unknown. A youth in the shadow of the Holocaust".
