action

A longing for the big world drives Claude Tremblay out of his remote village - in Montreal he seeks the fulfillment of his wishes. He slips into the house with his brother Roger, first finds work in the slaughterhouse, then in the garbage disposal, but he is further away than ever from the goal of his dreams. Eventually he met a girl, Geneviève, fell in love with her and quickly met with love. But soon this first happiness will be stale; the dissatisfaction leaves Claude unstable. So it happens that he loses his job. Then he tried his luck as a singer and guitarist - and this time he was successful. In a young talent competition, Claude wins a prize and at the same time wins the favor of a TV announcer - but Claude's love for Geneviève falls by the wayside.

After all the disappointments, Claude finally seeks refuge at home, in the country. But he quickly realizes that he has become a stranger here too. So he sets off a second time into the "new", the "big" world ...

Remarks

Leading actor Claude Gauthier not only plays a double role in the film, he also wrote the music. Above all, the song “Geneviève”, which is repeated over and over again, gives the event an additional framework and reminds us that “Between the Worlds” is also and in spite of everything a love story.

The outdoor shots were all taken in the Canadian province of Québec , namely in Montreal, Saint-Irénée, Trois-Rivières and Île-aux-Coudres.

Reviews

The Protestant Film Observer summarized his criticism after the German television premiere as follows: “With the story of the young French-Canadian Claude, Brault describes the social condition of his country as it presents itself to the French-speaking part of the Canadian population who are in the minority. The film deserves the attention of all interested viewers from the age of 18, both because of its subject matter and because of its formal qualities. ”The lexicon of international film judges less benevolently :“ Franco-Canadian outsider film by the cameraman Brault [...] - socially meant, but in a romantic transfiguration of the already sappy story.
