action

Barbro has a twin sister. Nobody knows about it, not even their parents. When the two were born seven years ago, Ylva-Li ran to the rose bushes under which she was hiding. Ylva-Li likes her twin sister very much and just calls her the dearest sister . Barbro visits Ylva-Li every day. The two speak a secret language that only the two understand. This is how they call the rose bush, for example, Salikon. There is a hole under the salicon, this leads to a long staircase that ends at the door to the hall where Ylva-Li is queen. From there the two sisters go on a lot of adventures. They play with their dogs and rabbits, bathe in a fountain or go horse riding. One day the two of them go on a long excursion with their horses Goldfunken and Silberfunken. It will be a wonderful day on which you will ride through the forest of the wicked, try the most beautiful dishes with the good guys or hear the trees making music and the flowers singing in the most beautiful valley in the world. But at the end of the day, Ylva-Li Barbro has something to tell. When Salikon's roses wither, it means Ylva-Li is dead. Barbro desperately rides away. In the royal hall, she later eats pancakes with Ylva-Li and finally the two hug each other as they say goodbye.

When Barbro returns home far too late, she notices that her mother was very worried about her and is very happy to see her again. Barbro's mother also tells that her father brought something for Barbro. As soon as Barbro goes into her room, she sees a basket with a small dog in front of her bed. Barbro is overjoyed. When Barbro goes into the garden the next morning, she sees that Salikon's roses have withered and that there is no longer a hole in the ground.

reception

Dearest Sister is one of Astrid Lindgren's most popular children's books.

The Enfants Terribles Magazine thinks that history had a profound and poetic side, and a melancholy, but soothing voice. She convincingly describes one of the difficulties in life that both children and adults struggle with: loneliness.

Eva-Lotta Hultén thinks that Hans Arnold's pictures create the magic of the book. They are beautiful, obscure, hazy, dramatic, full of rare creatures, knotty roots, flowers, rabbits and butterflies and make the whole book shimmer.

Reading Astrid describes Dearest Sister as a short but charming story with a poignant ending that will help children who feel alone. It teaches children about imagination, friendship and life cycles. Hans Arnold did an incredible job on this book, using color and imagination to enrich the story. The details in each picture are overwhelming.

Susann Forsberg presented Dearest Sister as her favorite book. It is about belonging and longing, as well as the power of fantasy that saves people from loneliness.
