action

Five-year-old Bertil, whose parents work in the factory, meets a thumbs up whose name is Nils Karlsson or Nisse for short and who lives in a mouse hole under Bertil's bed. Nisse reveals a magic word to Bertil that can make him small enough to fit into the mouse hole. Bertil helps his new friend set up the mousehole.

background

The fairy tale was first published in 1949 in the Nils Karlsson Pyssling fairy tale collection . Astrid Lindgren was awarded the Nils Holgersson plaque for this book in 1950 . The story addresses the problem of key children, whose parents have to work all day and who are therefore largely on their own during the day after school - at a time when there was no state childcare in Scandinavia either.

In 1956 the story was also published as a picture book by Nils Karlsson-Pyssling flyttar with illustrations by Ilon Wikland . The picture book was published in German in 1957 by Oetinger-Verlag .

Movie

In 1990 the story was made into a film. The director was Staffan Götestam , who had already worked as an actor on the Lindgren film The Lionheart Brothers . Lindgren expanded the fairy tale for the film and introduced other characters that do not appear in fairy tales and picture books.

Radio plays and audio books

A reading of the short story by Manfred Steffen was released on cassette in 1992, together with The Doll Mirabell and In the Land of Twilight . The stories were published under the title Nils Karlsson-Däumling and other stories on the Deutsche Grammophon label . Manfred Steffen's reading can also be heard on the CD Märchen from the Oetinger publishing group .

In addition, a CD was published by the Oetinger publishing group under the title Nils Karlsson-Däumling and other stories . This time the short story was told by Stefan Kaminski . In addition to Nils Karlsson-Däumling , readings of the stories The Princess Who Didn't Want to Play and In the Woods Are No Robbers appeared on the CD.

The film was also released as a radio play on cassette in 1992. The story was published by the Karussell label . The narrator is Wolf Frass . Apart from Nils Karlsson-Däumling , there are no other stories to be found on the cassette. This is particularly due to the fact that the film story is much longer than the short story.
