A journey in stories: from Junibacken to Nangilima ( Swedish Sagoresan: från Junibacken till Nangilima ) is a picture book by Astrid Lindgren and Marit Törnqvist . The text from the book was originally written for the story train in the Junibacken Museum in Stockholm and later published as a picture book. A journey in stories: from Junibacken to Nangilima is the last text by Astrid Lindgren. She wrote this at the age of 89 in collaboration with Marit Törnqvist. At the time, Lindgren was suffering from hearing loss and poor eyesight and had forgotten many of her earlier stories.

The picture book describes what the characters from the stories of Madita , Michel from Lönneberga , Karlsson vom Dach , Nils Karlsson-Däumling , Ronja the robber's daughter and The Lionheart Brothers have experienced. Next to the text are illustrations by Marit Törnqvist .

Overview

Staffan Götestam planned to create a story train in the Junibacken Museum in Stockholm in 1994 . To do this, he wanted to build a small model world of Astrid Lindgren's stories. He contacted Marit Törnqvist , who had already illustrated several picture books by Astrid Lindgren, and asked her to design the model world. The stories were detailed. For example, 240 small houses were built for Karlsson vom Dach . Almost 70 set designers worked on the model world, including builders, joiners, sculptors, landscapers, lighting experts, etc.

At first Astrid Lindgren was skeptical when she was asked to write a short text for the story train. At the time Astrid Lindgren was almost 90 years old and had already forgotten some of her own books. She explained that she did not know how an almost blind, almost deaf and half mad woman should write and read a text. But then Astrid Lindgren also helped design the model world and enjoyed this work. So Törnqvist and Lindgren sat together every morning on Lindgren's sofa and worked for several weeks. To do this, they read the books and carefully studied the illustrations in order to combine Lindgren's different stories into one text. Törnqvist already knew Lindgren from her childhood, because her mother Rita Törnqvist-Verschuur translated Astrid Lindgren's texts into Dutch. Törnqvist-Verschuur and Lindgren maintained a professional but also personal contact for years. Marit Törnqvist spent the summers as a child in Sweden. Even as an adult, Marit Törnqvist visited Lindgren every time she came to Stockholm. Since the two knew each other so well, working together was easy. Törnqvist managed to present Astrid Lindgren's ideas to her satisfaction.

Stories that were described were Madita , Michel from Lönneberga , Karlsson vom Dach , Nils Karlsson-Däumling , Ronja the robber's daughter and The Lionheart Brothers .

On June 8, 1996, the Junibacken story train was inaugurated by the Swedish king and queen. Astrid Lindgren's reading of the Swedish text can be heard while traveling on the story train.

Ten years after the inauguration, the picture book Sagoresan: från Junibacken till Nangilima was published in Sweden . It contained the text by Astrid Lindgren and illustrations by Marit Törnqvist. The book has been translated into several languages ​​including English, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish.

The pictures from the book were used for exhibitions in Sweden and the Netherlands.

While Christmas in Småland was Lindgren's last story a long time ago , A Journey in Tales: from Junibacken to Nangilima is Lindgren's last written text.

publication

In 2006 the text was first published as a picture book in Sweden. Marit Törnqvist illustrated the book. Later English, German, Dutch, Norwegian and Finnish editions of the book followed. While the foreign language editions can be bought in stores, the German edition of the book is only available at the Junibacken Museum.

The Dutch edition of the book also contains a CD with the reading of the text by Rita Törnqvist-Verschuur. The CD contains the recording that is also played for Dutch visitors when they visit the story train.

Mathilde Lemm criticizes that there are no smooth transitions between the scenes in the various Astrid Lindgren stories. The text is more of a summary of the stories and is well suited as a refresher on Astrid Lindgren's stories. The illustrations are impressive and adapt to the style of the stories. Drawings showing Madita and Michel are much more colorful and brighter than those by Ronja and the Löwenherz brothers.
