Holidays on Saltkrokan (Roman)

Ferien auf Saltkrokan ( Swedish original title: Vi på Saltkråkan , literally: We on Saltkrokan) is a novel by the children's book author Astrid Lindgren , published in 1964 . It is based on the script for the series Ferien on the Crow Island and the feature film The Enchanted Prince . The story is told in the book Jule and the Pirates .

action

The main characters are the somewhat impractical, widowed Stockholm writer Melcher Melcherson (original: Melker Melkersson), his 19-year-old daughter Malin and his three sons: thirteen-year-old Johann (original: Johan), twelve-year-old Niklas and seven-year-old Pelle (actually Per) . Since the death of her mother, the pretty and intelligent Malin has been a surrogate mother for her brothers and adult contact person for her father, who is often overwhelmed by everyday life. The absent-minded Johann looks after his father, Niklas is calm and balanced, Pelle's most striking characteristic is his limitless love of animals, which even extends to insects.

The family rents a house for their summer vacation on the fictional island of Saltkrokan, which is in the archipelago off Stockholm. Melcher has rented the "carpenter's house" without looking at it first, and it turns out to be a bit shabby with a leaky roof and frogs in the well in front of it. Nevertheless, the family soon feels at home.

The Melchersons quickly made the acquaintance of the other islanders, especially the neighboring Grankvist family, consisting of Märta and Nisse and their three daughters, thirteen-year-old Teddy (actually Theodora), twelve-year-old Freddy (actually Frederika) and six-year-old Tjorven (actually Karin Maria Eleonora Josefina who "looks more like Tjorven", as her mother thinks) as well as her huge St. Bernard boatswain. Other characters are old Söderman and his little granddaughter Stina, a tireless storyteller, the farmers Jansson and Vesterman - the latter decried as a troublemaker - and the teacher Björn, who falls unhappily in love with Malin.

A recurring utterance by Melcher is the remark “this day is a life”. It is a quote from the writer Thomas Thorild (18th century), "Denna dagen ett liv", which Astrid Lindgren came across in 1925 while visiting Ellen Key .

The male Melchersons' secret concern is that Malin will marry and leave the family. Johann and Niklas therefore put off every young man who dares to go near Malin, especially the conceited Krister. However, Tjorven and Stina believe that Malin should marry a prince, and plan to find one for her. To this end, they kiss a frog and a handsome young man - the naturalist Peter Malm - appears on the scene. Malin actually falls in love with Peter and becomes engaged to him.

After the idyllic first summer on Saltkrokan, tragic events occur during the second vacation. Pelle's beloved rabbit Jocke is bitten to death because Pelle forgot to close his stable door properly. The dog boatswain is suspected of tearing sheep as well as biting Jocke to death and is to be shot. However, Nisse fails to shoot the boatswain and at the last minute it turns out that both the rabbit and the sheep fell victim to a fox.

The Melchersons plan to spend any future summer on the island. Everything shakes when the old owner of the house, Mrs. Sjöblom, wants to sell the carpenter's house. A potential buyer is the wealthy bank director Karlberg, who comes to see the house with his cocky daughter Lotta and wants to have it torn down. Melcher can't actually buy a house, but unexpectedly receives a scholarship. When he wanted to buy Mrs. Sjöblom's carpenter's house, Karlberg, who was with Mrs. Sjöblom before Melcher, seemed to have gotten ahead of him, but Mrs. Sjöblom announced that she had already sold the house to a third party. The unknown third turns out to be Pelle, who bought the carpenter's house with a crown as a deposit. The Melchersons are allowed to stay in their apartment "outermost in the sea".

background

The novel was written by Astrid Lindgren based on her scripts for the television series Holidays on Crows Island and the feature film The Enchanted Prince . While these were broadcast in Sweden before the novel was published, the novel was first published in Germany. Only then were the television series and feature film shown. The story in the novel is followed by the films Das Trollkind (1965) and Die Seeräuber (1966), which were also released in book form as Jule and the pirates .
