Jonas G. Howard

Jonas George Howard (born May 22, 1825 in New Albany , Floyd County , Indiana , †  October 5, 1911 in Jeffersonville , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonas Howard first attended private schools and then studied at Indiana Asbury College , later DePauw University in Greencastle . After subsequent law studies at Louisville Law School in Kentucky and Indiana University in Bloomington and his admission to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession in Jeffersonville. Between 1854 and 1879 he was the legal representative of this city several times. From 1859 to 1863 he was a member of the local city council.

Politically, Howard was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1863 to 1866 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Strother M. Stockslager on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . In 1888 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Jonas returned to practice as a lawyer in Jeffersonville. He also dealt with agricultural matters. He died on October 5, 1911 in Jeffersonville, where he was also buried.
