Mark Edward Souder (born July 18, 1950 in Fort Wayne , Indiana ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2010 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Mark Souder attended Leo High School until 1968 and then studied at Indiana University in Fort Wayne until 1972 . He finished his education in 1974 with a degree from the University of Notre Dame . Between 1983 and 1993 he was a member of the advisory staff of the Congressman and later US Senator and Ambassador to Germany, Dan Coats . From 1985 to 1988 he served as a staff director for the Special Congress Committee for Children, Youth and Family. He also worked as a manager for a furniture company and became the owner of Souder's General Store .

Politically, Souder became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1994 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Jill Long Thompson on January 3, 1995 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on May 21, 2010 . Since 2003 he has represented the third district of his state there as the successor to Timothy J. Roemer ; it was last confirmed in November 2009 with a 55 percent share of the vote.

Souder was a member of the Committee on Homeland Security , the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform as well as a total of six sub-committees. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Souder's resignation was the result of an affair with a married employee on his staff; he has been married since 1974 and has three children. His mandate fell to Marlin Stutzman after a by-election .
