John U. Pettit

John Upfold Pettit (born September 11, 1820 in Fabius , Onondaga County , New York , †  March 21, 1881 in Wabash , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1861 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After completing an academic education, John Pettit attended Hamilton College in Clinton . He then studied at Union College in Schenectady until 1839 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1841, he began to work in Wabash in this profession. Between 1850 and 1853 he was the American consul in Maranhão, Brazil .

Politically, Pettit was initially a member of the short-lived opposition party . In the congressional elections of 1854 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Andrew J. Harlan on March 4, 1855 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1861 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . Since 1857 Pettit represented the Republican Party , which he had since joined. Between 1855 and 1857 he was chairman of the Post Office's Expenditure Control Committee.

In 1865, John Pettit was a member and President of the Indiana House of Representatives . Between 1872 and 1880 he served as a judge in the 27th judicial district of his state. He died in Wabash on March 21, 1881.
