Manuel Machata (born April 18, 1984 in Berchtesgaden ) is a former German bobsleigh driver .

Manuel Machata grew up in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden . He made his Abitur at the sports high school of the CJD Christophorus Schools in Berchtesgaden . After graduating from high school, he joined the Bundeswehr sports promotion group . In 2006 he became German junior champion in two-man and four-man bobsleigh and junior world champion in four-man bobsleigh. Machata started regularly in the Bobsleigh European Cup since November 2006 . There he won in 2006 and 2007 at Königssee and in 2007 in Igls he won the four-man bobsleigh. In 2007 he was German runner-up in the two-man and four-man bobsleigh in Königssee behind Thomas Florschütz 's bobsleigh , and third in the two-man bobsleigh championships in Altenberg in 2008 . At the 2009 Junior World Championships at Königssee, he came second in both two and four-man bobsleigh. In 2009 he also won the overall European Cup ranking.

For the 2010/11 season Machata secured the World Cup place, which became free after André Lange's resignation. Although he was classified in the B-squad behind the two A-squad drivers Karl Angerer and Thomas Florschütz , he surprisingly achieved his first victory in the two-man bobsleigh at the start of the season with his push-puller Andreas Bredau on the difficult track in Whistler the simultaneous Angerer and Lyndon Rush . At the next World Cup station in Calgary, he also celebrated his maiden victory in the four-man bobsleigh in the line-up of Makarow , Bredau and Poser in the historic triple success of the German bobsleigh teams.

In the course of the season, further victories in the four in Igls and Winterberg followed as well as in the penultimate station on the natural ice rink in St. Moritz in two. At the competition in Winterberg, the 2011 European Championship was held at the same time , and victory with his pushers Richard Adjei , Andreas Bredau and Florian Becke thus meant Machata's first continental title in the four-man bobsleigh.

Although he achieved his worst individual results of the season at the World Cup final in Cesana Pariol with fifteenth place in two and eleventh place in four, he reached second place in the overall ranking in the small sled and secured the overall World Cup victory in his first season in the big sled. On February 20, 2011, he won the silver medal in the two-man bobsleigh at the World Championships at Königssee . With his pusher Andreas Bredau, he and Thomas Florschütz's bobsleigh took second place, each 0.18 seconds behind the winner Alexander Subkow from Russia. The culmination of his career so far was the world championship title in the four-man bobsleigh in the 2011 season, which he won on February 27, 2011 in Königssee.

Manuel Machata could not qualify for one of the World Cup starting places in the 2013/14 season. He was not nominated for the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014 without a World Cup appearance in the season . After the end of the games, he was criticized when it became known that he had given one of his private sets of runners to the Russian bobsleigh driver Alexander Zubkov , who won gold medals in the two-man and four-man bobsleigh. On March 3, 2014, Manuel Machata was banned from competitions for one year and a fine of 5000 euros from the BSD for his skid trade, against which Machata appealed. On April 7, 2014, the sentence was withdrawn at a hearing before the association's legal committee.

In October 2015, Machata ended his career as an active driver and then took on a new role as the national bobsleigh coach in China .
