Bogdan Musiol (born July 25, 1957 in Świętochłowice , Upper Silesia ) is a former German bobsleigh athlete . In addition to seven Olympic medal wins, he was world champion in the four-man bobsleigh in 1978 and 1991, world champion in two-man bobsleigh in 1989 and European champion in two-man bobsleigh in 1983.

life and career

Musiol's family moved from the People's Republic of Poland to the GDR in the 1960s . In Wermsdorf he started as a track and field athlete , where he was above all a good shot putter . In 1977 he switched to bobsleigh. First he drove in the two-man bobsleigh with the pilot Horst Bernhardt . With Horst Schönau he became world champion for the first time in 1978. Little by little he drove together with almost all the important bobsleigh pilots of the GDR: Bernhard Germeshausen , Meinhard Nehmer , Bernhard Lehmann , Detlef Richter and finally Wolfgang Hoppe .

From 1980 to 1994 Musiol took part in five Olympic Games (statistics below). At the end of his career, the captain of the NVA was the most successful bobsleigh driver ever with 31 medals in international competitions (Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships - 7 × gold, 16 × silver, 8 × bronze). Only his long-time pilot Wolfgang Hoppe was able to surpass this mark with 33 successes. Musiol started for the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof , from which the later WSV Oberhof 05 emerged , for which he himself competed towards the end of his career.

In 2000 he became sports manager of the bobsleigh and sledge association for Germany . He is the father of the ski jumper Julian Musiol .

Musiol was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit in 1980 and 1988 . After winning the silver medal at the 1992 Olympics, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .
