Early life
After being a longtime favorite of every designer in the world - Versace, Calvin Klein, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Prada and Marc Jacobs, Gail retired from the annual shows to focus exclusively on a lucrative career in print work for which she shot covers and fashion spreads for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Marie Claire with photographers such as Mario Testino, Steven Miesel, Patrick Demarchlier, Arthur Elgort, Craig McDean and Peter Lindberg. She also shot advertising campaigns and catalogs, which took her to exotic locations all over the world.

Career
As a teenager growing up in London, Gail started modelling at the persuasion of her ballet teacher. She was quickly signed by an agent and went to Japan, where the 17-year-old matured into a professional model, learning to speak Japanese. By the time she arrived in New York a year later, she already had financial independence and a full "Model Book" - the all important "resume" in the modelling industry. After her first shoot with Steven Meisel, Gail became one of the top models in the business, once appearing in four different layouts in a single issue of American Vogue.

Little Joe Woman
Her inspiration for 'Little Joe by Gail Elliott' came out of her experience, as a well-traveled model and out of her necessity to find what she calls "comfortable and flattering - sexy little nothings!"
Elliot ventured into fashion design, starting a clothing label with her husband Joe Coffey in 2002, which was named Little Joe Woman. The label was started in New York and was subsequently based out of Sydney, Australia. The company's headquarters was later transferred to Bali, Indonesia. Elliot's husband is the brand's CEO while Elliot is its creative director. The brand, which has been described as "a rock-chic, luxe-resort fashion line", originally offered slip dresses and camisoles.

She recalls checking into hotels tired and jet lagged and wanting only "to take a bath, change into comfortable clothes and order room service." The clothing she found available was so flimsy, too short or overtly sexy, that she would have to wrap a towel around herself to answer the door! "It's nice to wear clothing that is sexy enough for your boyfriend, without making the room service guy blush," says Gail. "It's a fine line..."

Gail Elliott (born 1966) is an English fashion designer and former model.[1]

Early life[edit]

Elliot was born in Balham, London, in 1966.[2] She is of mixed Anglo-Indian, Scottish and other European ancestry.[2][3]

Career[edit]

Modeling[edit]

Elliot began to model when she was 17 years old, at the suggestion of her ballet teacher.[2] She moved to Tokyo, Japan, where she worked as a model for two years, after which she moved to New York City.[2][4] Over the years, Elliott modeled for some of the world's major fashion brands such as Versace, Valentino, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Tom Ford, and Donna Karan.[2][4] Elliot worked with photographers such as Steven Meisel and Mario Testino.[2] Her modeling career spanned a period of 24 years.[4]

Little Joe Woman[edit]

Elliot ventured into fashion design, starting a clothing label with her husband Joe Coffey in 2002, which was named Little Joe Woman.[2][5][6] The label was started in New York and was subsequently based out of Sydney, Australia.[2][7][8] The company's headquarters was later transferred to Bali, Indonesia.[7] Elliot's husband is the brand's CEO while Elliot is its creative director.[4] The brand, which has been described as "a rock-chic, luxe-resort fashion line",[7] originally offered slip dresses and camisoles.[2][4]

Personal life[edit]

During her first trip to Australia, Elliott was introduced to her now-husband Coffey by INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence, who at the time was the boyfriend of her model friend Helena Christensen.[1][2][9] Elliott and Coffey were married in 1997.[10] Her wedding gown was designed by Azzedine Alaïa, while Christensen, Cindy Crawford, and Yasmin Le Bon were some of her bridesmaids.[10]
