Maddaford began running as a child. He relocated to the United States after accepting a track scholarship from [[Eastern New Mexico University]] in [[Portales, New Mexico]]. While in college, Maddaford met his wife, Jeanette. After retiring from professional running, Maddaford became a physical education teacher at an elementary school in [[Tucumcari, New Mexico]].
