Mustafa Sandal |
---|
Mustafa Sandal, commonly known as Musti, is a famous Turkish pop singer. He is fluent in English, Turkish, Italian and French. He emerged in the early 1990s with the revival of Turkish pop music and is one of the most successful pop singers in Turkey. Musti is famous in Europe for his songs "Moonlight" and "İsyankar" in countries such as Germany, Switzerland[1], and Austria[2].
Early Life
Mustafa Sandal was born on January 11, 1970 in İstanbul. When he first started school, his classmates and teachers quickly realized his talents in music. When Musti heard a song, he was immediately able to pick out the different instruments and their melodies throughout the music. He finished high school at Geneva, Switzerland. He then transferred to New Hampshire College in the United States. After graduating, he believed that his own dreams were more important and went back to İstanbul. Mustafa Sandal helped write many songs with songwriters Onno Tunç, Selçuk Basar, Ugur Basar, and Garo Mafyan. During this period, he also wrote songs for famous Turkish artists such as Zerrin Özer, Hakan Peker, Yonca Evcimik, and Aysegül Aldinç.
Career
1994-1997: Early Success
Mustafa Sandal released his debut album Suç Bende in 1994. It sold 1.7 million copies and won with a landslide victory the greatest selling album of the year. With this success he gave 140 concerts in Turkey as well as thirty concerts in Europe. Mustafa Sandal was famous for being a singer, songwriter, as well as a producer. In 1995, Musti helped write and produce Turkish pop singer Sibel Alaş's Adam album. It sold 400,000 copies. In 1996, Mustafa Sandal moved to London to isolate himself from fans while preparing his next album. His sophomore album titled Gölgede Aynı sold 2.6 million copies. After the instant success of this album, he performed 140 concerts all across Turkey. At the time, this became a record in Turkey. Musti released another version of this album which contained a remix of the song "Bir Anda" as a bonus track. With it, he released a music video to the remix version of the song "Bir Anda" which used tie-clip techniques. It was the first time a Turkish music video used these techniques. Later that year, Sandal produced Turkish pop singer İzel's new album titled "Emanet."[3] The opening track of this album titled "Emanet" featured Mustafa Sandal.
1998-2000: Albums with Prestij Muzik
In 1998, Mustafa Sandal signed into the record label Prestij Müzik and released his third album titled Detay. The album sold many copies but sold poorly compared to his first two albums with Şahin Özer. However, the music video of the song "Aya Benzer" was played several times each hour on Turkish television stations such as Kral TV. During this time, Musti established his own record label titled YADA Productions. In 2000, after Turkish pop singer Tarkan's success with the Tarkan album, Musti signed a contract with Sony Music France and released his first international album titled Araba. The album contained a mix of songs from Musti's first three albums. This album was not successful and received little to no airplay on European radio stations. In June, Musti released his fourth album titled album Akışına Bırak. This album had little success and sold less copies than his previous albums.
2001-2002: Kop, Rivalry with Tarkan, and the 2002 World Cup
In 2001, Prestij Müzik was bankrupted and Musti signed into his current record label Erol Köse Productions. His first album with Erol Köse Productions titled Kop was released in June 2002. This album was very successful and the song "Pazara Kadar" ("Until Sunday") was played several times each hour on Turkish radio stations. Musti had made a successful comeback. During this time, Tarkan had released a promo single titled "Bir Oluruz Yolunda" and had filmed a music video featuring clips of the Turkish national soccer team. However, Musti's new hit "Pazara Kadar" was used frequently as a cheer for the soccer team during their matches. Turkish television station Kral TV even added in footage from the matches into Sandal's new music video. Due to the failure of Tarkan's "Bir Oluruz Yolunda" single, a rivalry flared between Musti and Tarkan. Because the general public was not sure whether to embrace Tarkan or to strip him of his citizenship, many believed that Musti was infact the better singer. After this success of this album, Musti filmed a music video for the remix song Kopmam Lazım ("I have to let it go") and released the remix in his first single for this song under an agreement with Turkish phone service company Telsim. A subscription to Telsim needed to be made in order to purchase the single.
2003-2004: Attempts at International Success
In 2003, with the remix of his Top hit "Aya Benzer" Mustafa Sandal (featuring Gulcan) was back to Europe. He reached the top 10 in Germany, entered the Austrian Charts and charted on Star Radio’s top 40, then released the single "Araba 2004".
Between 2004 - 2005, Mustafa Sandal released his maxi-single Iste (Want It) out with the hit "İsyankar" ("Rebellious"). This single topped the charts in Europe, such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland and remained over 6 months on top 20.[4]
In 2006 he won a Gold Record in Germany for the high sales of his single "Isyankar".[5]
2005-2007: Personal Struggles and New Album
In 2007, Musti announced that he had plans for a new album. The album was originally set to be released April 23, 2007. However, due to unknown reasons the album was pushed to May 19, 2007[6]. He also announced that one internationally famous singer will be featured on the album[7].
