WIPR-TV is an educational, full-power television station located in San Juan, Puerto Rico transmitting over analog channel 6, digital 55. The station is owned and operated by the Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation and is a member of PBS.

The station has one full-power satellite: WIPM-TV, channel 3 in Mayagüez. WIPM-TV, though mostly a repeater, does produce some local programming. Its studios and offices are located in South Post Street in Mayagüez. WIPM-TV's digital signal is not yet on the air.

Because of its audience, much of WIPR's programming is in Spanish, with local programming or Spanish dubs or subtitles of English PBS programming. The station is branded as TUTV - Tu Universo Televisión. During the 1990s, the station was branded as Teve 6 / Teve 3.

The English translation of its callsign meaning is "Instructional/Public Radio and Television."

History

WIPR-TV was created as a result of lobbying for public broadcasting in Puerto Rico, beginning in the 1950s. The station went on the air for the first time in 1958 becoming the first educational television station in Latin America.

It was also unique among other government-controlled broadcasters in the Caribbean as it did not show commercials. All other government-controlled broadcasters (with the exception of Cuba and the US Virgin Islands) showed commercials.

The station was and still remains as one of the few TV stations in Puerto Rico with English-language programming.

TV-6 & TV-3

In 1993, WIPR-TV, and WIPM-TV were called TV-6 & TV-3. Its programming made a total turnabout from the past administrations, creating an up to date broadcast, joining the cultural aspects with the entertainment ones. Some of the shows that were telecast then were: Desde Mi Pueblo, with Yoyo Boing, Deborah Carthy-Deu, and Tony Croatto, Juego de Estrellas, with Edgardo Huertas, Nuestra Musica, with different hosts every week, Estas Invitado, with Marylin Pupo, Voces en Función, with Lou Briel, Noches de Café Teatro, with Maria Falcon and Edgardo Huertas, El Show de Chucho Avellanet, A Toda Maquina, with Ivonne Goderich & Carlos Fontané, Hoy, with Linette Torres and Yoyo Boing, Mucho Gusto, with Johanna Rosaly, Isla-Aeróbicos, and the children's series, Pequeños en Acción, produced by Edgardo Huertas, and Maria Chuzema, produced by Tere Marichal, among many others. A Drama Project, was born during the late 1990s, and local mini-series and telenovelas made a come-back on TV. In 1996, TV-6 & TV-3, were the first Puerto Rican television stations that would telecast their programs simultaneously through its website, on the Internet red.

Programming

TuTV Informa

In 1996, WIPR launched a newscast created by then president, Jorge Inserni, branded as Noti-Seis or "News Six". The newscast was first anchored by Pedro Luis García and Gloria Soltero and only had a 6:00 PM edition. Later that year, the station premiered a 9:00 PM edition anchored by the same 6:00 PM team.

In 2001, WIPR changed its branding to TuTV – Tu Universo Televisión and the newscast was renamed TuTV Informa. Currently the newscast is anchored by Gloria Soltero and David Reyes. Along with the daily newscasts, WIPR produces an in-depth newscast called TuTV Analiza which airs weekly on Sundays.
