Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Uncontroversial proposals
Only list here proposals that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete (for example, spelling and capitalization fixes). Do not list a proposed page move in this section if there is any possibility that it could be opposed by anyone. Please list new requests at the bottom of the list and use {{subst:WP:RM2|Old page name|Requested name|Reason for move}} rather than copying previous entries. The template will automatically include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required.
If you object to a proposal listed here, please relist it in the #Incomplete and contested proposals section below.
- Harry Callahan (fictional character) → Harry Callahan (character) — Correct naming convention for characters. —Saikokira 19:14, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Allarco Entertainment → Superchannel — Newly-announced name of soon-to-launch Canadian TV channel; company has no other assets and no other channels currently using that name. —— stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 01:33, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- UTI Bank → Axis Bank — Corporate Name change Ashishgala 10:16, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nature reserves in Russia → Zapovednik — Article (being revised) describes zapovedniks and not other kinds of nature reserve - —The preceding malformed item was added by Geoff Harper (talk • contribs) at 09:34, 31 July 2007. — Beardo 14:00, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Alexander Smirnov (figure skater) → Alexander Smirnov — Dab page has existed for over a year and none of the other pages linked have ever existed. Completely unncessary dab. —Kolindigo 22:36, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- The Birth of Venus (disambiguation) → The Birth of Venus — Needless disambiguation. —Korg (talk) 00:14, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Panamá City, Panamá → Panama City — accents are not used for "Panama City" in English; also the most famous "Panama City" in the world, so ", Panama" is not needed. —Chanheigeorge 02:14, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- National Basketball Association Playoffs → NBA Playoffs - this is the most common name, also the "brand name" if I may add. --Howard the Duck 02:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Apia, Samoa → Apia — Apia already redirects there, so dab not needed —Chanheigeorge 07:41, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Incomplete and contested proposals
- Wade Wilson (football) → Wade Wilson (American football) — WP:D —Juan Miguel Fangio| ►Chat 15:03, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Contested --07:14, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- History of the Linux kernel → History of Linux —(Discuss)— Everyone agrees that Linux#History is a summery of History of the Linux kernel so I think it needs to broaden.Mike92591 23:49, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Talk:House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities → Talk:House Un-American Activities Committee
- Comment: This article is currently in a screwy state. the article House Un-American Activities Committee has a different title than its talk page (currently Talk:House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities). "House Un-American Activities Committee" is the name by which this committee is most commonly known, so I think that's the title that should be used. RedSpruce 19:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Mulholland Dr. (film) → Mulholland Dr. — Actual title; latter redirects to former —-Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 03:42, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Contested --Stemonitis 08:46, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- William "Billy" Dixon → William Dixon —(Discuss)— No need for nicknames in the title —Reginmund 22:24, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- WASP (disambiguation) → WASP — As the latter is merely a redirect, I fail to see why a separate, specially named disambiguation is needed. —JPG-GR 04:13, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Contested - see WP:DAB. --Stemonitis 14:44, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Other proposals
Please use the correct template: see the instructions above. Do not attempt to copy and paste formatting from another listing. |
- New Achnacarry → Achnacarry —(Discuss)— I can find no other reference to the name "New Achnacarry" apart from the renaming of this page. I put a comment on the discussion page a couple of weeks ago but no one has justified the renaming. I suggest a redirect from New Achnacarry to Achnacarry page. (I tried to rename myself and ended up with a temporary page "Achnacarry 2" which can be deleted) —jmb 07:38, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Official History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union → History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union —(Discuss)— A clear case of WP:POINT. One editor dislikes the content, and shifts the article of a pov naming rather than editing the material. —Soman 06:33, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Showtaro Morikubo → Shōtarō Morikubo —(Discuss)- as per Manual of Style (Japan-related articles) Greg Jones II 01:41, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- John III Sobieski → Jan III Sobieski —(Discuss)— as per Ministry of Foreigns Affairs of Poland —Poeticbent talk 23:43, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Split → Split, Croatia —(Discuss)— per Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Page_naming_conventions, the plain article Split should serve as the neutral disambiguation page. —supernorton 19:10, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Fairy Tail Members → List of Fairy Tail members —(Discuss)— Per WP:NAME and Wikipedia:Lists (stand-alone lists)#Naming conventions. Blocked by a good-faith cut-and-paste; if moved, the page histories will need to be spliced together. ——TangentCube, Dialogues 17:22, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Prehistoric_settlement_of_Great_Britain_and_Ireland → Settlement_of_Great_Britain_and_Ireland —(Discuss)— Title is inaccurate as article deals with both prehistoric and historic migration/settlement —Nebulousity 15:43, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Mancomunitat de Catalunya → Commonwealth of Catalonia —(Discuss)—WP:UE?. — AjaxSmack 08:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- La Franja → Franja de Ponent —(Discuss)— Most common name used in English for the region and is not coincidentally the title of the Catalan article. — AjaxSmack 07:54, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Rive Gauche → Left Bank (Paris) —(Discuss)— Per WP:USEENGLISH. Other Left Banks and Right Banks are translated. — AjaxSmack 07:54, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nishi Nippori Station → Nishi-Nippori Station —(Discuss)— I suggest that "Nishi-Nippori Station" is the more appropriate title, since it follows the defacto standard format of hyphenating and capitalizing Japanese station names with a prefix such as "Nishi-" or "Shin-" etc. However, "Nishi-Nippori Station" already exists as a redirect page. It should be noted that many links to this page appear as "Nishi Nippori Station —DAJF 03:39, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nishiarai Station → Nishi-Arai Station —(Discuss)— The "Nishi-Arai Station" article was moved back to "Nishiarai Station" recently leaving "Nishi-Arai Station" as a redirect, but I suggest that "Nishi-Arai" is more appropriate, since it follows the defacto standard format of hyphenating and capitalizing Japanese station names with a prefix such as "Nishi-" or "Shin-" etc. —DAJF 03:29, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Famous people with the surname Smyth → Smyth (surname) —(Discuss) and Famous people with the surname Smith → To be decided —(Discuss) — From WP:MOSDAB#Given names or surnames "For longer lists, create a new Title (name), Title (surname) and/or Title (given name) page." Also the word "famous" should be avoided in article names as it is subjective. Not all notable people are famous. (I'm not sure what to propose for the similar Famous people with the surname Smith as the obvious choice of Smith (surname) is already an article.) —Saikokira 20:25, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Baltimore City College Speech and Debate → Bancroft Literary Association and Carrollton-Wight Literary Society —(Discuss)— The new name is the proper name of the speech team and debate team at Baltimore City College. Though WP:MOS suggests that "and" should be avoided in the title if possible in this case it seems appropriate as the articles cannot stand alone. —Golem88991 18:49, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Melian (Middle-earth) → Melian —(Discuss)— Middle-earth character in the only entity called "Melian", and supposingly the most searched for among the titles with Melian as part. For full discussion see Talk:Melian. —Súrendil 18:30, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Pope John Paul II Stadium → Marshal Józef Piłsudski Stadium —(Discuss)— Change title "Pope John Paul II Stadium", to "Marshal Józef Piłsudski Stadium", as it is in article. The "Marshal Józef Piłsudski Stadium", or "Marszałek Józef Piłsudski Stadium" is real title of this object.
- New Brunswick electoral redistribution → List of New Brunswick electoral redistributions —(Discuss)— the title New Brunswick electoral redistribution without an "s" just isn't grammatically correct. The title should at least be New Brunswick electoral redistributions, but I think List of New Brunswick electoral redistributions would be a better name for this article considering that there is not much text here other than the list. —Yvesnimmo 17:06, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Mark Martin (NASCAR) → Mark Martin —(Discuss)— By far the most famous of the Mark Martins. One is a judge on a state Supreme Court and the other is a cartoonist who is apparently often mistaken for the NASCAR driver. Also included in the nomination is moving Mark Martin to Mark Martin (disambiguation). —Recury 16:18, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Non-player character → Non-playable character —(Discuss)— Non-playable is the right and main term for NPC, as it can also mean another human person during an online game. —SmileyBarry 14:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sagunto/Sagunt → Sagunto —(Discuss)— A common English name exists (see Encyclopaedia Britannica Sagunto), and have to be prefered to any local name, according to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) (above all, the current name is eccentric). —Juiced lemon 15:39, 26 July 2007 (UTC) — completed 14:04, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Bling(Confession Of A King) → Bling (Confession of a King) —(Discuss)— "Bling(Confession Of A King)" is an actual article on the song, but the correct title is occupied by a redirect to Sam's Town. —CrookedAsterisk (contribs • talk) 12:17, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Toyota Previa → Toyota Estima -(Discuss)- Why is this under Toyota Previa? Where in the world is it still sold as the Previa? Everywhere I've seen it, it's the Estima (and in AUS, the Tarago). Ever since the Sienna's NA introduction, the Previa has vanished. Please tell me if I am wrong. (I found this on Talk:Toyota Previa) 67.84.198.222 00:13, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Lori and Reba Schappell → Lori and George Schappell —(Discuss)— That is Reba's new performing name, according to multiple online sources, such as USA Weekly News.[2] —Tim Thomason 22:00, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Solar nebula → Nebular hypothesis —(Discuss)— This title of this article is simply wrong. The "solar nebula" is not the nebula out of which the Sun and solar system formed. That nebula is called the "presolar nebula." The solar nebula is the residue remaining after the formation of the Sun that went on to form the planets. I can provide a number of scholarly references (List of links here) which describe the mass of the solar nebula as far less than that of the Sun, which would be impossible if the Sun formed out of the solar nebula. Regardless, this article goes far beyond describing the solar or presolar nebulae. It is in fact an account of the nebular hypothesis of the formation of the solar system, and should be described as such. Serendipodous 06:43, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- List of largest urban sub-divisions in England by population → List of largest towns and cities in England by population —(Discuss)— See talk page, I have proposed several alternative options, I have just listed my preferred name for the RM template. The page was moved to the current title contrary to consensus, and I consider it confusing and overdisambiguated. Hopefully consensus will emerge over a more suitable title. —DWaterson 23:43, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- disc or disk → disc —(Discuss)— Article should use just one spelling in the title —Reginmund 22:25, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Louis, 7th duc de Broglie → Louis de Broglie —(Discuss)— The 7th duc part of his name isn't what he is known by in English. —Benplowman 20:43, 28 July 2007 (UTC) Benplowman 20:43, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Whisky Galore! → Whisky Galore —(Discuss)— Novel title doesn't include the '!' - that's only in the film title —JBellis 18:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Microbrowser → Mobile Browser —(Discuss)— The term "microbrowser" is obsolete. Mobile browsers span basic WAP to full desktop capability. —Fdavis99 17:55, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- List of stars with confirmed extrasolar planets → List of published extrasolar planets —(Discuss)— Firstly, this page lists each extrasolar planet per system, not just the stars themselves, which means this is more a list of planets rather than stars. Secondly, some of these planets are not necessarily confirmed by follow-up observations, but they have been published in some form of refereed literature. —Chaos syndrome 15:13, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Panini → Panini (grammarian) —(Discuss)— It would be better if Panini pointed to Panini (disambiguation) instead of to the Sanskrit grammarian —Petecarney 12:17, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Panino → Panini (sandwich) —(Discuss)— The word 'Panino' is not part of the English language whereas 'Panini' is a perfectly good loanword from Italian —Petecarney 11:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Commonwealth Realm → Commonwealth realm —(Discuss)— The word "realm" in this context is a common noun, just like Commonwealth country or Commonwealth citizen. Jonathan David Makepeace 22:20, 27 July 2007 (UTC) —Jonathan David Makepeace 22:20, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- Jack Straw (politician) → Jack Straw —(Discuss)— Jack Straw redirects here anyway and he is the best known "Jack Straw". —Philip Stevens 18:07, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
