Development
The combo system has been described as "simple for our button-mashing friends", and the countering system is "very timing-specific" and "simple to pull off".[41] There are 21[42] playable characters and 15 "what if" scenarios, which branch off from the original storyline.[citation needed] The game has 5 battle stages in both versions of the game.[42] In addition, more than 800 anime cut scenes were included.[citation needed]
On May 10, 2008, a trial demo was released on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network, although the European PlayStation Network did not receive it until the 5th of June

The game met with generally positive reviews from critics. Many critics said the story mode for the game was impressive in relation to the anime version of the story, but stated that newcomers to the series may be confused as to what is going on. Some critics argued that the game gets laggier the farther away the player's online opponent is. However, many reviewers enjoyed the character models, and were impressed by the graphics. Like most Dragon Ball Z games, the fighting and action were praised. On average the game has a 74% on Gamerankings. So far, the game has sold a total of 749,652[67] units worldwide.
