(100) Hecate is an asteroid named after Hecate , the goddess of magic, necromancy and the crossroads from Greek mythology . Hecate was the 100th asteroid discovered by JC Watson on July 11, 1868. He also chose this name for the fourth asteroid he discovered because Ekató stands for 'hundred' in Greek.

(100) Hecate is one of the largest members of the Hygiea family of asteroids. This family includes almost 5000 asteroids.
