(12661) Schelling is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on February 27, 1976 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian state observatory in Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .
The asteroid was named on May 23, 2000 after the German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775–1854), who, as one of the main exponents of German idealism, influenced a large number of philosophers.
