(1607) Mavis is an asteroid of the main belt , which on September 3, 1950 by E. L. Johnson , from the Union Observatory in Johannesburg , was discovered off.

The asteroid is named after the first name of the wife of JA Bruwer , an astronomer at the Union Observatory.
