(16856) Banach is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 28 December 1997 by the American Italo- astronomer Paul G. Comba at Prescott Observatory was discovered.

The celestial body was named after the Polish mathematician Stefan Banach (1892–1945), the founder of modern functional analysis and one of the main representatives of the Lviv school of mathematicians .
