(1744) Harriet is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey .
The asteroid is named after the wife of the American astronomer Paul Herget . Along with the three discoverers, Herget was one of the initiators of the Palomar Leiden survey.
