(20012) Ranke is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 13, 1991 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory in Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named after the German historian and historiographer Leopold von Ranke (1795–1886), who was Professor of History in Berlin from 1825 to 1871. With his methodology based on historicism , he created new approaches and is therefore considered one of the founding fathers of modern history.
