(2221) Chilton is a main middle belt asteroid discovered on August 25, 1976 at the Oak Ridge Observatory of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centers for Astrophysicsin , Harvard, Massachusetts ( IAU code 801). The asteroid belongs to the Maria family, a group of asteroids named after (170) Maria .

(2221) Chilton was named after Jean Chilton McCrosky , wife of the American astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centers for Astrophysics Richard Eugene McCrosky (after whom the asteroid (1880) McCrosky was named).
