(3868) Mendoza is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .
The asteroid was named after the Mexican astronomer Eugenio E. Mendoza V. (* 1928) on the occasion of his 65th birthday .
