(7012) Hobbes is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 11 February 1988 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( observatory code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid is named after the English mathematician , state theorist and philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679), who developed a theory of absolutism in his major work Leviathan and is therefore considered the founder of enlightened absolutism .
