(9496) Ockels is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 26 March 1971 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( observatory code 675) in California was discovered.
The asteroid is named after the Dutch physicist Wubbo Ockels (1946–2014), who was the first Dutch person to fly into space in 1985 as part of the D1 mission .
