Ákos Braun

Ákos Braun (born June 26, 1978 in Paks ) is a former Hungarian judoka . In 2005 he was European and world champion in lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kg.

Braun won his first medal in 1993 when he was third in the weight class up to 55 kg at the Hungarian youth championships. Two years later he was youth champion in the weight class up to 65 kg.

In 2002, Braun achieved his first major success in the adult class by winning the World Cup in Rotterdam. In 2003 he won his first Hungarian championship title. At the 2005 European Championships in Rotterdam, he beat the Latvians Vsevolods Zeļonijs in the semifinals and the Israeli Yoel Razvozov in the final . Three and a half months later, at the World Championships in Cairo in 2005 , he defeated the Romanian Claudiu Bastea in the semifinals and the Italian Francesco Bruyere in the final . At the European Team Championships in 2005, Braun took second place with the Hungarian team. The Hungarian sports press voted Ákos Braun athlete of the year for his success in 2005 .

In 2006 Braun was student world champion, in 2007 he won his second Hungarian championship title. At the European Championships in Lisbon in 2008, Braun lost to the Belgian Dirk Van Tichelt in the semifinals , and Braun won the bronze medal through his victory over the Italian Marco Maddaloni .
