features

butterfly

The wing tops of the moths, which have a wingspan of about 28 to 34 millimeters, are bright orange-brown in the males and crisscrossed by a fine, black pattern consisting of points and lines. The females, on the other hand, are mostly purple-brown or green-brown in color. Characteristic are yellow-green areas next to red and white drawing elements on the underside of the hind wing.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg has a cone-like shape, is strongly ribbed and shimmers red-brown. The caterpillars are black-brown in color, have a yellowish, brown interrupted topline and short, gray bristles. The doll is dark brown in color with spotty markings. It has a stocky shape and is almost twice as wide as that of pales .

Similar species

The similar mother-of-pearl butterfly is similar to some other mother-of-pearl butterfly species , particularly the following:

  • Alpine mat mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria pales ). These moths are a bit smaller. The females do not show the predominant violet-brown or green-brown upper side coloration in B. napaea , just as little as their more yellow-green colored rear wing underside, but have a rust-red base color.
  • Boloria graeca is a species of roughly the same size, the underside of the hind wing tending to be even more yellowish in color.
  • High-moor mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria aquilonaris ). The moths are more broadly winged with more rounded hind wings. The black markings are a bit more distinctive and stronger.
  • Snakewort mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria titania ). The drawing on the front is more distinctive and somewhat darker, the underside of the hind wings is colored rusty red.
  • Alpine mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria thore ). The species has much darker, partially merging drawing elements on the wing fronts.
  • Lean-grass mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Boloria dia ). The moths are usually much smaller and more strongly drawn.
  • Meadowsweet mother-of-pearl butterfly ( Brenthis ino ). The moths are larger, have conspicuously rounded wings and a pale, less pronounced red markings on the back of the rear wing.

In order to be absolutely sure about the determination, specialists should be consulted.

distribution and habitat

The occurrence of the species includes higher altitudes in the Pyrenees , Alps , Fennoscandia , southern Siberia , the Altai and the Amur region as well as in Alaska and Wyoming . It can usually be found at altitudes between 1200 and 2800 meters on mountain meadows, but in northern Norway it occasionally comes as far as the coastline. In Austria in the Alpine region, but many sites are extinct.

Way of life

The moths live in one generation from late June to August. They like to fly over mountain meadows full of flowers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of lower plants such as violets ( Viola ) and species of knotweed ( Persicaria, Polygonum ). They hibernate small. At higher altitudes or northern latitudes, the development cycle can last two growing seasons.

Danger

The species occurs in Germany only in the Bavarian Alps and is listed on the red list of endangered species in category R (species with geographical restriction).
