The tasks result from the Hamburg Chamber Act for the Health Professions (HmbKGH):
- Supervision of professional duties
- Perception of the professional interests of the chamber members
- Design, promotion and regulation of quality assurance and advanced training
- Public Health Service Support
- Submission of opinions
- Dispute settlement
- Assumption of government contracts
- Issue of the electronic health professional ID
- Issuance of the European professional card
- Submission of early warning messages via the European Internal Market System (IMI)

The Hamburg Medical Association was founded on April 25, 1895.
President
From 1994 to 2002 and from 2006 to December 10, 2018, Frank Ulrich Montgomery was President of the Hamburg Medical Association. On December 10, 2018, Pedram Emami was elected President at the Assembly of Delegates.
