Åland Democracy ( Swedish Åländsk Demokratie , abbreviation ÅD ) is a right-wing populist party in the autonomous Finnish province of Åland . Your party chairman Stephan Toivonen , who has been represented in the Lagting since the parliamentary elections in Åland in 2015, forms the far-right end of parliament .
history
The party was founded in 2015 before the general election in the wake of the emergence of right-wing populist parties across Europe during the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 . During the election campaign, political opponents of the Åland democracy criticized the fact that two of the four candidates for the laging had a criminal past, although they explicitly warned against the criminal energy of refugees from so-called high-risk countries.
In its first election in 2015, the party achieved 3.6% and was able to occupy a seat in the new Lagting with its top candidate Stephan Toivonen. In the local elections held at the same time in the 16 municipalities , the party ran in Finström and Mariehamn . There it reached 4.0% and 3.5% respectively. In Mariehamn the number of votes was sufficient for the party's only municipal council mandate.
In the parliamentary elections in Åland in 2019 , the party only achieved 2.9%, but was able to hold its one seat in the Lagting. Their only municipal council seat in Mariehamn was lost.
Alignment
In terms of its programmatic orientation, the party corresponds to other right-wing populist parties in Europe, for example Alternative für Deutschland or the Freedom Party of Austria . One of its core goals is to contain migration from so-called high-risk countries. In her party program she calls for Christians to be preferred to other migrant groups. Refugee shelters should not be built in Åland at all and the city of Mariehamn should no longer accept refugees.
In addition , the party denies man-made climate change , despite supporting the European Union's goals to curb the use of fossil fuels . In the area of economic policy , the party strives for good conditions for the development and extensive freedom of action of companies , for example by expanding the infrastructure . It can therefore also be described as economically liberal .
On the autonomy of Åland, the party says that in the case of an independent financial security and worsening situation of Sweden in Finland an independence of Åland is the best way. She sees the advantages of a sovereign Åland particularly in the fact that it is possible to completely determine entry and migration yourself. In the course of this, a foreign infiltration of Sweden as a culturally connected country after 2015 is mentioned in particular , from which one wants to protect oneself as Åland.
