Årø Sund
Årø Sund is a narrow sound in the Little Belt between Årøsund in Sønderjylland and the island of Årø , south of Haderslev Fjord . It is between 300 meters and one kilometer wide and has a depth of up to 25 meters. The ferry routes to Assens on Funen and to Haderslev in the west have been running through the sound since the Middle Ages.
Kong Valdemars Jordebog reported as early as 1231 about a royal ferry between Årøsund and Assens. In 1640, the Royal Mail determined that the Assens – Årøsund ferry was part of the main postal route between Copenhagen – Hamburg before the Middelfart – Snoghøj ferry.
