Édouard Debat-Ponsan
Édouard Bernard Debat-Ponsan (born April 25, 1847 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne department , † January 29, 1913 in Paris ) was a French painter .
Life
Édouard Debat-Ponsan was a son of Jacques Debat-Ponsan and his wife Elisabeth Martel; the painter Jules-Arsène Garnier was his brother-in-law. At the age of 14 he came to the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown in 1861 . With the support of his teachers, he was able to go to Paris around 1865 and was accepted at the EBA there; u. a. he became a student of the painter Alexandre Cabanel .
At Cabanel's intercession, two works by Debat-Ponsan, Le récit de Philetas and Au sortir de la carrière , were admitted to the major annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris in 1870 . In the same year he signed up as a volunteer and took part in the war of 1870/71 against the Kingdom of Prussia .
After the end of the war, Debat-Ponsan settled back in Paris and founded his own studio. A little later he married Marguerite Garnier and had three children with her: Marguerite Jeanne (1879–1929; she later became a doctor and married Robert Debré), Jacques (1882–1942; he later became a highly respected architect) and Simone (1886–1986; she later married Jacques Dupré). The first Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic - Michel Debré - was his grandson.
As a war veteran and a supporter of the Republicans , he became a supporter of Émile Zola , when Zola's “ J'accuse ..! “ Alfred Dreyfus tried to defend.
In the spring of 1882 Debat-Ponsan went on a study trip to Turkey and Greece. His impressions and sketches formed the basis for many of the pictures with which Debat-Ponsan recommended himself as an important representative of Orientalism .
At the age of almost 66, Édouard Debat-Ponsan died on January 29, 1913 in Paris, where he found his final resting place.
