Édouard-Gabriel Rinfret PC OC QC (born May 12, 1905 in Saint-Jérôme , Québec , † January 11, 1994 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada . In the 17th cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent , he was Minister of Post from 1949 to 1952. He then worked for 25 years as an associate judge at the Québec Court of Appeal , eventually serving as President of the Québec Supreme Court from 1977 and 1980.

Life

After attending school, Rinfret completed a law degree and graduated with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) and a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.). After the lawyer's approval, he took a position as a lawyer and was for his lawyer's merits later Attorney-General (Queen's Counsel) appointed.

As a candidate of the Liberal Party, he was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Commons in the election of June 11, 1945 and initially represented the constituency of Outremont and then from the election of June 27, 1949 until his voluntary resignation on February 13, 1952, the constituency Outremont-Saint-Jean . During his membership in Parliament he was between December 5, 1947 and June 30, 1948 Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Banking and Commerce. On August 25, 1949, Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent appointed Rinfret as Minister of Post in the 17th Canadian Cabinet. He held this ministerial office until his resignation on February 12, 1952.

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, he was appointed associate judge at the Court of Appeal of Québec (then the Cour du Banc de la Reine ) on February 13, 1952 . He held the office of judge until 1977. In addition to his judicial work, he was involved in the field of culture and theater and in 1961 founded the Festival national de théâtre in Montreal . In 1975 Rinfret, who received the Canadian Drama Award , published Le Théâtre canadien d'expression française , a representation of French-speaking Canadian theater works .

Most recently, he served as President of the Québec Supreme Court between 1977 and 1980.

For his many years of service to politics and the judiciary, but also to Québec's cultural life, Rinfret was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Canada ( OC ) on December 20, 1982 .
