Émile Auguste François Thomas Zurlinden (born November 3, 1837 in Colmar , †  March 9, 1929 ) was a French general and minister of war .

Zurlinden graduated from the École polytechnique in Paris , entered an artillery regiment in 1858 and was promoted to Sous-lieutenant in 1860 . In 1866 he was promoted to the Capitaine .

In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was captured after the surrender of Metz and taken to Glogau , where he was able to escape on Christmas Eve. He returned to France and continued to fight against Germany.

In 1894 he was given command of the 4th Army Corps in Le Mans . Between January 27 and October 28, 1895, Zurlinden was Minister of War in the Ribot cabinet . He then took over the 15th Army Corps in Marseille . In January 1898 he was appointed Military Governor of Paris and again Minister of War in September. Zurlinden resigned after just two weeks due to the Dreyfus affair and went back to his previous position.

He had been a member of the Supreme War Council since 1900 before he was transferred to the reserve on November 3, 1902, on his 65th birthday.

Émile Zurlinden died on March 9, 1929.
