Émile Bin
Émile Bin , full name Jean Baptiste Émile Philippe Bin (born February 10, 1825 in Paris , † September 4, 1897 in Marly-la-Ville ) was a French painter and local politician.
biography
At the request of his parents that he should become a decorative painter, he became a student of his uncle Nicolas Gosse . So at the age of 13, he entered his uncle's studio. In 1840 he began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts with Léon Cogniet , which he finished with second place in the Prix de Rome .
As a classic portrait painter and history painter, Bin opened a studio on Montmartre , in which he also gave courses. Artists like Charles Léandre and Henri Rivière were trained here. Even Paul Signac worked in 1883 for a short time into bins studio.
During the siege of Paris from 1870 to 1871, Bin was a member of the Armaments Committee.
Bin was also one of the founding members of the Société des Éclectiques , which was initiated in 1872 by Paul Gachet . In 1878 Bin was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . From 1878 to 1882 he was mayor of the 18th arrondissement of Paris. He was also a founding member of the Société des Artistes Français, founded in 1881 .
During the time when he was mayor, he painted his friend Georges Clemenceau, among others . Bin lost the post of mayor in 1889 due to a scandal that broke out after he had also painted a portrait of General Boulanger . Bin was known as a supporter of radical revisionism , which did not run counter to his attitude to Boulangism . As mayor, however, Bin had been very committed to the social issues of his arrondissement. In this way he made it possible for a delegation of the municipal rag collectors to be received by the prefect . In an open letter he complained about the poor working conditions in his arrondissement.
In 1886, Bin am Montmartre and some friends founded a society with the purpose of preserving old monuments and historical facilities on Montmartre, in the Quartier de Clignancourt and Quartier de la Chapelle . It was thanks to this society that the church of St-Pierre de Montmartre was saved from the construction of the Sacré-Cœur . Furthermore, a unique collection of photographs of the entire historical Montmartre was made.
