In 1793, when he was nineteen, Hulot volunteered for the army. In the Battle of Altenkirchen (July 4, 1796) he fought under the command of Maréchal général Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult . In the battle of Montenotte (April 12, 1796) he became an orderly officer at Soult and was taken prisoner by Austria.

After the Battle of Marengo (June 14, 1800), Hulot was released and was accepted into Soult's staff as aide-de-camp . He took part in the battles near Ulm (October 16/19, 1805) and Austerlitz (December 2, 1805) and was wounded several times.

At Preussisch Eylau (February 7/8, 1807) Hulot was already in command of his own, but was wounded again. After his recovery, Hulot was briefly used in various posts in the Grande Armée and promoted to colonel in 1808.

The invasion of Spain had been going on for several years when Napoleon Bonaparte ordered Hulot to Spain in early 1811. Hulot fought at Gévora (February 19, 1811), at La Albuera (May 16, 1811) and in front of Fuentes de Oñoro (May 3-5, 1811).

On August 9, 1812, Hulot was promoted to général de brigade and fought as such a. a. before Hanau (October 30/31, 1813) and Paris (March 30, 1814). After Napoleon's abdication and the Treaty of Fontainebleau (April 11, 1814), Hulot joined the Bourbons . He remained a partisan of King Louis XVIII. until Napoleon's reign of the Hundred Days began. Hulot rejoined his emperor and fought under the command of Marshal Étienne-Maurice Gérard in the Battle of Ligny (June 16, 1815).

After the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815), Hulot was sent into temporary retirement. It was only after the intercession of Marshal Laurent de Gouvion Saint-Cyr that the king confirmed Hulot in his rank in 1819 and appointed him inspecteur d'infanterie and two years later inspecteur général .
