In the end, Laipman dies from the bullets of a tsarist punitive battalion, committed to his ideas until the end.

background

The plot takes up the historical person Bernhard Laipman (n) (1865–1906). The fearless revolutionary came from a relatively educated peasantry. His brother was the painter Ants Laikmaa (1844–1942).

A critical memorandum by the local farmers against the Baltic German landowner Baron von Uexküll goes back to Bernhard Laipmann .

On the orders of the Russian general Vladimir Besobrasov, the insubordinate Laipmann was on January 16 . / January 29,  1906 greg. together with two comrades-in-arms as troublemakers at Vigala before a firing squad.

Shortly after his execution, Laipman was elevated to a myth. Some legends quickly grew up around him. His work was celebrated in some folk songs. The literary processing of the material contributed to the transfiguration. The Finnish-Estonian writer Aino Kallas (1878–1956) wrote the novella Bernhard Riives , in which Laipman prefers sincerity, truth and pride to death. In 1936 the material was also brought to the theater stage.

In 1933, a monument by the sculptor Roman Haavamägi (1891–1964) for Laipman was inaugurated on the Baltic Sea beach of Haapsalu .

production

The experimental film by filmmaker Mark Soosaar (* 1946) deals with Laipman's world of thought with great psychological depth of focus.

However, the film was not shown in cinemas or television. Some scenes were used for Soosaar's feature film Jõulud Vigalas ("Christmas in Vigala "), shot a year later . The film also deals with Laipman's life.
