Services

On August 9th, Ömer Özkan transplanted the uterus of a dead organ donor to a twenty-one year old after the patient was born without a uterus. This was the first transplant of this type in the world, as previously only living donations were used in these cases. In 2013 the patient became pregnant through in vitro fertilization, but the pregnancy had to be terminated in the eighth week of pregnancy due to the death of the fetus. The case attracted worldwide attention.

On January 21, 2012, Ömer Özkan performed a face transplant for the first time in Turkey. The 19-year-old worker was badly burned from an overturned stove as a baby. At the same time, the doctor performed a second transplant. The second patient had lost both arms and a leg when he was 11 years old when he touched a power line because he tried to drive away birds with a metal rod. However, the transplanted right leg had to be amputated again only one day later because of complications. The donor organs and limbs for both operations came from one donor, so the operations had to be performed almost simultaneously. Özcan had removed organs and limbs himself in Usak and had flown to Antalya in a plane specially provided by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

On May 16, 2012, he and his team completed the fourth face transplant and the second full face transplant in Turkey.

Private life

Ömer Özkan is married to the doctor Özlenen Özkan, who works at the same institute. The couple have two daughters.
