Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu

Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu (born November 2, 1965 in Şarkikaraağaç ) is a Turkish pulmonologist , human rights activist and former member of the Turkish parliament for the People's Democratic Party (HDP).

Life and education

Gergerlioğlu completed his elementary and school education at the religious vocational school in Bursa . In 1990 he graduated from Anadolu University with a degree in human medicine . He started working in a medical center in Tecirli, Iğdır Province . His second stop was the Orhaneli State Hospital in Bursa. In 2000 he completed his specialist training in pulmonology at the Süreyyapaşa Pneumology Hospital. He was suspended from public service because of one of the messages he shared on social media. This took place in the wake of the state of emergency that was declared after the attempted coup on July 15, 2016 . It was established under decree KHK no. 679suspended on January 6, 2017. He is also generally prohibited from leaving the country. He was only able to travel abroad after being elected Member of Parliament in the parliamentary elections in June 2018 .

Gergerlioğlu worked in education between 2009 and 2015 and was the founding director of a preschool institute. He was also the Kocaeli representative of an educational institution called Akıl Oyunları (Mind Games in English), which focuses on developing children's intelligence.

In addition to Turkish, Gergerlioğlu speaks English and Arabic. He is married and has three children.

Human rights engagement

Between 2003 and 2007 he assumed the presidency of the Kocaeli department of the Association for Human Rights and Solidarity for the Oppressed (known as Mazlumder . At the local level in Kocaeli he led various activities. In 2007 the General Assembly of Mazlumder elected him president at the national level. 2009 Gergerlioglu resigned from office.

He became spokesman for the Kocaeli Peace Platform (2013), which consisted of various NGOs active in Kocaeli , and spokesman for the Platform for Rights and Justice founded in March 2017.

He took part in numerous human rights events at home and abroad and organized various human rights campaigns. Since 2007 he has been writing on national and global political issues in local, national and international newspapers and websites. He has given interviews and created podcasts on human rights violations. He also makes weekly shows on Periscope called "OFG TV".

Political career

In the parliamentary elections on June 24, 2018, he was elected to the Turkish parliament, in which he represents Kocaeli for the People's Democratic Party (HDP). He is a member of the parliamentary commission for human rights inquiries.

Law Enforcement and Arrest

In February 2018, Gergerlioğlu was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison after posting an article on Twitter entitled “PKK: If the State Takes the Initiative, Peace Can Be Achieved in One Month”. As a result of this conviction, Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu was withdrawn from office on March 17, 2021. After his political immunity was withdrawn, he did not leave the building of the Turkish parliament and, together with other members of the HDP, initiated a so-called “Justice Watch”.

On the same day that his parliamentary immunity was lifted, the Turkish prosecutor filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court in the Bekir Şahin Court of Cassation demanding a five-year ban on political participation for him and 686 other HDP politicians. On the morning of March 21, 2021, he was arrested by the Turkish police and taken from the Turkish parliament. He was released shortly after his arrest. He was arrested again on April 2, 2021. He was transferred from prison to a hospital and had a heart operation with a stent inserted. A few hours later, he was transferred from the intensive care unit to the F-type high security prison in Sincan .
