Vegetative characteristics

The Austria Soldanelle is a delicate, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 2 to 10 centimeters. The simple leaf blade is rounded, often with a shallow bay at the base and up to 1 centimeter wide.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to July. The flower stem is loosely glandular and has only one flower. The mostly pale purple to white corolla is slit up to 1/3 of its length in a fringed hem.

Occurrence

The Austria Soldanelle is endemic to the northern Eastern Alps . It occurs from the Chiemgau Alps to the east, often in the Northern Limestone Alps , rarely in the Central Alps . There it grows in the alpine elevations in snow valleys on a calcareous base. In Bavaria it thrives at altitudes between 1700 and 1800 meters.

Taxonomy

The first description of Soldanella austriaca was made in 1904 by Friedrich Karl Max Vierhapper . A synonym for Soldanella austriaca Vierh. is Soldanella minima subsp. austriaca (Vierh.) Lüdi . It was discussed in 2004 whether the rank of the subspecies Soldanella minima subsp. Published in 1927 . austriaca (Vierh.) Lüdi is preferable.
