Ötscherland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The region south of the Ötscher is called the Ötscherland , the highest mountain in the Mostviertel at 1,893 meters . The dominant shape of the mountain is visible from afar. An almost equally high peak west of it is the Dürrenstein (1878 m), the northern valleys of which are usually also included in the area.

The Ötscherland corresponds to the eastern part of the so-called Eisenwurzen , where the ore of the Styrian Erzberg used to be processed. The most important municipalities in Ötscherland are Scheibbs (the district capital), Gaming , Lackenhof (municipality of Gaming), Puchenstuben , Sankt Anton an der Jeßnitz and further west Lunz am See , and in the southeastern part Annaberg and Mitterbach am Erlaufsee ; the latter two belong to the Lilienfeld district . In the south of the mountain massif lies the Ötscher-Tormäuer nature park , which is the largest nature reserve in Lower Austria at 170 km² .
