Short biography under the statue

Özay's family comes from the small town of Kızılcabölük . In 1953 he attended the industrial institute for boys ( Denizli Erkek Sanat Enstitüsü ) in Denizli . He started playing baglama at the age of 14 . At the age of 16 he met the well-known Turkish folk musician Muzaffer Sarısözen, who supported him in his musical career. He made his breakthrough in the radio program Yurttan Sesler (German: Voices from Home ) on Radio Ankara. Özay worked for some time in the film, radio and television headquarters of the National Ministry of Education ( Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı ).

Because of his origins in Denizli, he sings in the dialect of the Aegean region (Turkish: Ege Şivesi ). It celebrates the culture of its homeland and is popular in the Aegean region, but also in other areas of Turkey. Özay's trademark were three plucked instruments (bağlama, cura and tambura ) attached to each other , which he called yaren ("comrade, friend").

From 1973 he took part regularly with famous Turkish singers like Zeki Müren at the International Fair in Izmir ( İzmir Enternasyonal Fuarı ), which took place every September. Özay also played the lead role in a Yeşilçam film and appeared in children's programs on TRT . His last program that he moderated was Türk Halk Müziği İstekleri (German: Requests for Turkish Folk Music ) on the TRT-1 station.

Özay Gönlüm has given concerts in 23 different countries around the world, including nine European countries, the USA , Australia , China and India . In addition to his popular instrument, the bağlama, the cura and tambura were also his favorites. He came up with the idea of combining all three instruments. This enabled him to play all three plucked instruments in parallel.

Özay Gönlüm was a singer for 34 years. He developed a lung disease and was treated at Ankara University Hospital. However, on March 1, 2000, he died of lung disease. He was married to Ayten and had two daughters. A statue was erected in Denizli and Kızılcabölük as recognition.
